Honda Recall...

Honda is recalling 440,000 cars in the US for a defective airbags which on deployment can rupture and spray metal fragments. The cars recalled are Honda Civics, Accords and Acura TL sedans from 2001-03 . In May this year Ashley Parham ws killed in the parking lot of her school beleived to be due to the defective airbag which sprayed metal fragments on deployment puncturing her chest and neck.

Check whether your Honda is in the list of recalls  at www.owners.honda.com/recalls .

Honda has advised owners to wait until they receive a recall notice from their dealers.

Clunker bomb...

Hundreds of old cars everyday is getting traded in for newer cars thanks to cash for clunkers. What are the dealers doing with these old cars ? As per reports, these old cars are being administered “Clunker bomb” - sodium silicate which kills off the engine in a few seconds.  The Clunker bomb is also known as the “Engine Grenade” . Engine oil is drained off  , and then “Clunker bomb” is poured instead. Engine is started and within a few seconds the gas guzzling car is no more.  Not a pleasant sight for people who are attached to their old cars.

Cash for clunkers qualifying cars...

The Government  has increased the budget for cash for clunkers program from $1 billion to $2 billion . The cash for clunkers program in which you can trade in your old cars for newer environment friendly ones and get a rebate of $4500 has become more popular than anticipated. Your trade-in vehicle must

  • have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in
  • have a “new” combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less
  • be in drivable condition
  • be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in
  • The trade-in vehicle must have been manufactured not earlier than 25 years before the date of trade in and, in the case of a category 3 vehicle, must also have been manufactured not later than model year 2001

Note that work trucks (i.e., very large pickup trucks and cargo vans) have different requirements.
